The NPBC Food Bank Ministry is a program that started in 1997 as a service to residents near New Prospect Church in the Pleasant View area of Amherst County. The ministry originally started prior to 1997 as a Thanksgiving and Christmas food basket distribution for needy families and senior citizens and was very limited. However over the years it has grown to a full distribution food bank for any needy resident of Amherst County, Virginia. The food bank currently serves approximately 500 families per month and is a supplement to food stamps and/or WIC support. Our ministry is operated totally by volunteers from the church and community during 2010 these volunteers supplied nearly 15,000 volunteer man hours. Also a free clothes closet ministry is on site in the old Pleasant View Grocery clothing store.
Some the food we distribute is given to the food bank by the U.S. Department of Agriculture free of charge (we are USDA certified). The remaining food items are purchased by the food bank from the Lynchburg, Virginia Area Food Bank. The purchased items are paid for through donations from individuals, other churches and businesses. In addition to monetary donations the food bank also accepts donations of unopened personal care products, unopened nonperishable food items (cans, boxed or jars, sorry - no home canned items), and fresh vegetables. We do not accept tobacco, alcohol or any type of medications for obvious reasons. If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact New Prospect Baptist Church. Contact information can be found on "Contact Us" web page. All contributions may be tax deductible and would be greatly appreciated.
The food bank is open twice a week. On Wednesday and Saturday from 10:00AM until 12:00PM. It is located next to the church's offices and across the road from the main worship building.
